Frequently Asked Questions

1. What type of yoga is taught?

I teach 'Hatha' yoga which is a traditional style of yoga based on classical asanas (postures), breathing techniques and relaxation methods.

2. Are the classes suitable for beginners?

Yes. All my classes are mixed ability and new members can join at any time of the year. They are non-competitive and everyone works at their own pace.

3. What should I wear?

Something comfortable and unrestrictive. Additional warmer clothes can be worn for the relaxation periods. Bare feet are necessary for the standing posture session, but socks can be worn when sitting / laying etc.

4. What do I need to bring with me?

Something comfortable (and preferably non-slip) to lay on. An extra blanket may be useful in the winter months. You should also bring a small block or towel to cushion the head when laying.

5. Can I change classes if necessary?

Of course. although for the social continuity most people prefer to come on the same day / evening.

6. Am I too old / young to start practising yoga?

It is never too late to start, and the earlier the better. However, to attend my classes you must be over 16 and under 75 for insurance purposes.

7. I am taking medication for an on-going health problem. Will that be OK?

I am not medically qualified, so should you have any doubt about starting yoga, do consult with your GP first. However, many ailments are alleviated or helped through the practise of yoga.

8. Can I start a class while I am pregnant?

I have completed additional training to specifically teach classes for pregnancy, and I now run classes purely for pregnancy in addition to my normal classes. You do not have to have any previous experience of yoga before attending these. Please ring me to discuss this further before attending. I also teach on a one to one basis, if this is more suitable for you.

9. I have recently had a baby, can I attend a normal class?

It is best to join a special post natal yoga class when you have had a baby. This can be from six weeks after the birth up to 18 months after the birth. It is important that your pelvic floor has been strengthened again after pregnancy before starting any normal class, otherwise problems may occur at a later date. I do teach a specialised post natal class, see website for details or give me a ring to find out more. I can also come to your home for a private one hour session with or without your baby if this is preferable for you.

10. Are you a qualified tutor?

Yes. I qualified in 1985 with the British Wheel of Yoga organisation, the largest and most widely known international school of yoga. The training consisted of a three year part-time course with practical and written theory examinations. Every year I attend in service training days with the British Wheel of Yoga to keep up my qualification.I also attend other seminars and weekends to further my knowledge.

I qualified to teach Pregnancy yoga in 2004 and I completed my Post Natal yoga teacher training course in 2007.
